What 𑂜 means
It is a Kaithi consonant letter, not a standalone word. “Rha” names the letter; the surrounding Kaithi spelling supplies its reading.
Kaithi’s origins are uncertain. A copper-plate land grant linked to Chandradeva, who flourished around 1090, may be an early example if the plate’s script identification is correct. Administrative use is documented at least in the 16th century; Kaithi later carried commercial records, letters, personal records, religious works, and literature.
Why was Kaithi used?
It served practical record keeping and everyday writing. Kaithi grew from scribal practice into administration, commerce, correspondence, schooling, printing, and missionary publishing. Bihar selected it for courts and government offices in 1880.
By the early 20th century, Devanagari had eclipsed Kaithi in formal use. Kaithi is historically related to Devanagari and Gujarati; the three are distinct scripts in a North Indian tradition that grew from the older Brahmi writing system.
Why does 𑂜 show as a square?
A box usually means the font cannot render Kaithi. Font support varies by app and platform: without Kaithi coverage, 𑂜 may appear as a box, question mark, or blank. Kaithi fonts can use different presentation styles, changing the drawing without changing the encoded character.
Its natural setting is Kaithi text, transcription, or a historical record.
A lone glyph does not reveal a sender’s tone or the whole word.
