What 𑘜 means
It marks a retroflex n, made with the tongue curled back. A vowel sign adds or changes its vowel; a virama, the mark that removes a consonant’s built-in vowel, lets it join another consonant. Alone, 𑘜 is a letter sample, not a complete word. Modi belongs to the Nagari script family and has its own letterforms.
The 2011 Unicode proposal records traditions crediting Hemādri Pandit or Bāḷājī Avajī. It traces proto-Modi to the 12th century, a distinct Modi form to the 13th century, administrative use to the 16th century, and the earliest surviving Modi document to the early 17th century.
Modi served fast administrative writing for royal correspondence, revenue and land records, and other bureaucracy, alongside Balbodh, a Devanagari form used for literary and sacred writing. In the nineteenth century, print favored Balbodh; in the twentieth century, policy made Devanagari standard for Marathi. Modi later became a marker of Maratha-era history and heritage.
