What 𑘚 means
A retroflex d. In Modi script, Dda belongs within a word, not alone as a message.
Modi descends from Nagari, shaped for connected writing. A legend says Hemadri Pandit brought Modi from Sri Lanka; another credits Maratha court official Balaji Avaji with creating it. By the sixteenth century it served Marathi administration; its oldest surviving document dates to the early seventeenth century. Balbodh, Marathi’s Devanagari form, also carried literature and sacred writing. Print and policy marginalized Modi in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; official use ended in the 1950s.
