What 𑘙 means

Use a Modi-aware transliteration layout and a Modi-capable font.

For repeated writing, use a Modi transliteration layout: it maps keystrokes to Modi letters. The key for retroflex Ṭha varies by layout, so check its mapping before typing.

If 𑘙 appears as an empty box, the font may lack Modi support. A font with Modi coverage, such as Noto Sans Modi, can display it.

What does 𑘙 mean in Modi writing?

It is a consonant letter read inside a Modi word or syllable.

Modi developed from Nagari, another Indian script, as a joined-up hand suited to continuous writing. Traditions credit Hemadpant or Balaji Avaji with its creation; Unicode describes it as a Nagari-derived modification. Historical accounts place Modi use in the fifteenth century; Unicode describes its emergence in the sixteenth century and its earliest surviving document in the early seventeenth century.

Modi served correspondence, land and revenue records, and administration, and also appeared in education, journalism, print, personal papers, and diaries. From the nineteenth century onward, printing and language politics favored Balbodh, the Devanagari form used for Marathi; Modi was formally discontinued for Marathi by the mid-twentieth century. It later became a visual emblem of the early Maratha state.

Why does 𑘙 change shape in text?

Modi letterforms can change shape beside neighboring signs.

Modi fonts can use contextual consonant and vowel forms, including ligatures—joined shapes—based on neighboring signs. The same encoded letter may therefore look different inside a syllable or consonant cluster than on its own.

Technical and archival: alone, 𑘙 signals a Modi sample or transcription.

The Devanagari counterpart belongs to another script; keep it distinct in Modi text.

1

Why does 𑘙 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
