modi letter tta

Modi Letter Tta

25/79

𑘘 is a Modi-script consonant for a retroflex “t,” made with the tongue tip curled back; it normally carries a short “a” unless a sign changes it. It belongs inside a written word, not as a chat reaction. Modi grew from Nagari and became a fast-writing script for Marathi administration, before print favored Balbodh Devanagari.

Text symbol

What 𑘘 means

It represents a retroflex “t” sound.

The sound is made by curling the tongue tip back to the roof of the mouth and releasing it. Modi consonants usually carry an inherent short “a”; a vowel sign, or a mark that removes the vowel, changes the reading.

Why did Modi become Marathi's record-keeping script?

Its flowing forms helped scribes write quickly. Modi grew from Nagari, a related Indian script, and was shaped for continuous writing with fewer pen lifts. Marathi court scribes used it for orders, letters, land and revenue records; Balbodh, Marathi's form of Devanagari, served more literary and sacred writing. Some records mix Marathi with Persian.

A history of Marathi writing places Modi use as early as the 15th century; Unicode describes the script emerging in the 16th and cites an earliest surviving document from the early 17th. These mark reported use, script development and surviving evidence, not one settled starting date.

With print, Balbodh Devanagari gained ground in the 19th century and Modi use declined. Modi was formally discontinued as Marathi's standard in the 1950s. By 2023, a history lecture described renewed interest in Modi as a marker of Marathi heritage and of the early modern Maratha state, a regional power led by Marathi rulers.

How do I type 𑘘?

Modi font shaping adjusts consonant-vowel and consonant clusters to their neighbors. A different displayed form can be a contextual shape of the same letter.

Historical, linguistic, or typing context; this letter does not act as casual chat shorthand.

Alone, it identifies a letter, not a complete word or reaction.

1

Why does 𑘘 look different beside other Modi letters?

It is font shaping: neighboring consonant and vowel signs can trigger contextual Modi forms. The displayed shape changes to fit the sequence, while the letter's role stays the same.
