What न means

Both: a letter, and a small grammatical word in Hindi.

The Hindi n is dental: your tongue touches your upper teeth. The letter includes a default vowel, conventionally written a; a vowel sign replaces it, and a virama removes it. Sanskrit retains this default at word endings; Hindi can drop it depending on the word.

Its form evolved, rather than being invented at once. An ancestor appears in Brahmi, the script used in ruler Ashoka’s inscriptions from the 3rd century BCE. Later letter forms developed through Gupta and Nāgarī writing; by the 11th century Devanagari was a major script for Sanskrit literature. It also serves Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, and other languages.

What does न mean in a message?

Its position matters: a negative or a request for agreement.

A lone न may be a shortened “no” or “don’t,” but it does not tell you what is being refused. Check the preceding message rather than assuming rejection. The cues below apply to Hindi, not automatically to every language using this letter.

Why does न change shape?

Joining another consonant can give न a reduced form.

In न्द, n joins d without a vowel between them. This joined cluster, called a conjunct, contains multiple characters—not a new standalone letter. Fonts can draw the join differently.

Ordinary writing as a letter; as a Hindi word, its tone depends on the sentence.

A final `न` may seek agreement, not reject you.

Why does न show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
