dogra letter na

Dogra Letter Na

30/60

𑠝 is the Dogra consonant for n with a built-in a, roughly “na.” In Dogra writing, vowel signs change that vowel and a virama cancels it. If the character appears blank or as a box, the font may lack Dogra support.

What 𑠝 means

It represents n with a built-in a, roughly “na.” In a Dogra word, a vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama (a mark that cancels the built-in vowel) leaves the consonant without one.

Alone, it is one letter, so the surrounding Dogra text is needed to identify a word.

How did Dogra Akkhar develop?

It developed through a script lineage, not a one-time invention. Dogra belongs to a writing tradition based on Brahmi, an older South Asian script. Devāśeṣa followed the earlier Sharada script in the 13th century and gave rise to Takri. Takri developed regional varieties in the 16th century; its Dogri form was reformed and standardized in the 1860s as Dogra Akkhar, also called New Dogra.

Dogra Akkhar served public and scholarly Dogri writing, from official papers, land grants, and letters to stamps, postmarks, and books. A Dogri translation of Līlavatī, a mathematics text, appeared in 1872. In 1944, Devanagari was chosen as Dogri’s official script, shifting Dogra and Takri toward historical records and revival work. A Dogri reader familiar with Devanagari may meet Dogra mainly in that material; someone learning Dogra reads it as an ordinary consonant. Takri is also historically related to Gurmukhi and Landa.

Why does 𑠝 appear as a box?

The font or text stack may lack Dogra support. A missing box or blank display does not change the character. A font with Dogra coverage can render it.

In isolation, it is a script sample; inside Dogra text, it contributes one consonant.

Without surrounding Dogra text, do not infer a whole word or reaction.
