Dogra Letter Dha

29/60

What 𑠜 means

It writes the consonant conventionally transliterated as dha.

Dogra is the script; Dogri is the language it was used to write. In this abugida—a writing system where consonants carry a default vowel—𑠜 has an inherent “a.” A vowel sign changes that vowel; a virama removes it so consonants can form a cluster.

Where did Dogra letter dha come from?

It belongs to Dogra, a regional branch of the Takri writing tradition. Takri descended from Sharada through Devāśeṣa, an intermediate script that emerged in the 14th century; Takri became distinct by the 16th century.

Dogra was used to write Dogri in Jammu by the 17th century. Its New Dogra form was standardized in the 1860s under Maharaja Ranbir Singh, bringing it closer to Devanagari and Gurmukhi. It appeared in administration, on currency and stamps, and in books. The first book in standard Dogra, printed in 1872, was a Dogri translation of Līlāvatī, a Sanskrit mathematics treatise.

As of 2026, Dogri is generally written in Devanagari. Old and New Dogra use different letter shapes, so historical samples can show 𑠜 differently without changing the consonant.

How can I type 𑠜?

Use a Dogra keyboard or Unicode input in a compatible editor.

If your editor offers Unicode-hex entry, type 1181C and invoke its conversion command; keystrokes depend on the app and operating system. Unicode defines the character, not a keyboard layout.

Your font also needs Dogra support; a blank box signals a display gap. The character’s shape can differ between Old and New Dogra; the Unicode chart mainly shows New Dogra forms.

Questions people ask

2

Why does 𑠜 look different in old Dogra samples?

Old and New Dogra use different letter shapes, and the Unicode chart mainly shows New Dogra forms. An older sample can therefore show the same consonant with a different shape.

Why does 𑠜 appear as a box?

The font lacks a Dogra glyph. A font with Dogra support can display the letter; the box indicates a display issue, not a different consonant.
