makasar letter na

Makasar Letter Na

9/25

𑻨 is the “na” syllable sign in Makasar, a historical system also called the Makassarese bird script. Its consonant signs carry an inherent “a,” so this is a syllable-building letter, not a bare n. Old Makassarese writing recorded South Sulawesi chronicles, diaries, law, calendars, and religious teaching before Buginese replaced it.

What 𑻨 means

It represents the syllable “na,” not a bare “n.”

Makasar na is built as a syllable: a consonant sign carries an inherent “a,” which vowel signs can change. Final consonants are left unmarked, so the full reading can depend on surrounding text.

How was the Makasar bird script used?

It served as an official script in Makasar kingdoms.

It was maintained for official purposes in the 17th century. A Gowa Chronicle, a historical account, credits Daeng Pamatte' with establishing Makassarese record-keeping in the 16th century, not inventing the script. The tradition likely predates Islam’s arrival in Gowa in 1605. A scholarly survey identifies a copy of the Treaty of Bungaya from 1667 as the oldest verifiable surviving specimen; it includes Makassarese noble names. Manuscripts also preserve chronicles, diaries, customary law, calendars, and religious teaching.

What links Makasar to Rejang and Buginese?

Makasar may descend from Rejang; it shares features with Buginese.

Makasar is thought to have evolved from Rejang, a writing system from South Sumatra. It shares some features with Buginese, a distinct script also used in South Sulawesi. Buginese replaced Makasar in the 19th century.

A 2014 account offers one interpretation: continued Makasar writing marked Makassarese identity and ties to the past amid Bugis influence. It also reports that Makassarese readers familiar with Buginese script still needed old Makasar texts transliterated.

By itself, 𑻨 identifies a syllable; its place in a word comes from context.

Why does 𑻨 show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Makasar block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
