What น means
It represents the n sound in Thai. This Thai n belongs to the “low” consonant class: a spelling group that helps determine a syllable’s tone, or pitch pattern. “Low” does not mean you always pronounce it with a low pitch.
The teaching name น หนู (written in Latin letters as no nu) pairs it with หนู, “mouse” or “rat,” to help learners remember it.
The letter belongs to a writing tradition adapted for Thai sounds and tones. Early Thai script in Sukhothai developed from Old Khmer inscriptional forms of the 10th–13th centuries. Inscription 1, bearing the date 1292, is a key early example. Thai tradition credits King Ramkhamhaeng with creating the script, but scholars dispute that inscription’s dating and authorship.
How do you type น?
Switch to Thai Kedmanee input and press Latin O. Kedmanee is a Thai keyboard layout; other layouts may assign a different key.
A vowel displayed to the left of น is stored before it, even when pronounced after it. Preserve that character order when editing Thai text.
Someone sent me น alone
Ask for the surrounding text before translating it. A lone consonant is not enough to determine the intended Thai word or message.

Questions people ask
1Why does น show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
