What ꨔ means
Use a Cham keyboard that maps th to ꨔ. Nguoicham’s input method converts it when you press Space or Enter; other tools may behave differently.
What does ꨔ mean?
It is the Cham consonant letter tha. It is used within written syllables, not as a word on its own.
Where did Cham letter tha come from?
It belongs to the Brahmi-derived Cham script. Cham is a Brahmi-derived script; Brahmi was an early South Asian writing system. Cham inscriptions appear around the fifth century CE and record both Cham and Sanskrit; inscribed texts continue through the 13th century. From the 15th century, handwritten texts use Middle Cham, a later stage written in a more cursive hand than the stone inscriptions. The script served sacred and secular writing.
As of 2026, Cham script is used more in Eastern Cham communities. Western Cham writing traditions are distinct, and many Western Cham speakers also use Arabic-based writing.
