What ꨓ means
It marks the plain t sound at the start of a Cham syllable. The Cham t ꨓ is an onset—the consonant that opens a syllable—not a word or reaction. Its sound has no extra puff of air. Vowel signs follow it; a final sign can close the syllable.
The earliest surviving Cham-language evidence generally cited is the Đông Yên Châu inscription, a stone text from the 4th century CE. Cham writing developed through Pallava-related scripts used in southern India, part of the wider Brahmi family of South Asian scripts.
Why was Cham writing created?
It was adapted to record language, rule, and religious life. Early Cham inscriptions in Champa recorded royal and religious matters, including temple donations and ritual references.
Later Cham manuscripts covered calendars, ceremonies, agriculture, stories, and religious teaching. The writing moved from public inscriptions into varied manuscript use while its letters continued to spell language.
What if someone sends me ꨓ?
Treat a lone ꨓ as a writing sample, not a reaction. Without surrounding Cham text, this consonant gives no mood or standalone message; ask what word or passage it came from.
A 2020 proposal to add Western Cham to Unicode, the shared standard for digital text, describes Eastern and Western Cham as distinct traditions whose readers may need extra training to read both. ꨓ belongs to Eastern Cham, also called Akhar Thrah.
It points to Eastern Cham language, heritage, or script-study contexts.
A lone ꨓ is not a universal Cham emblem: Eastern and Western Cham use distinct writing traditions.
