Cham Letter Nhja

19/83

The Cham letter nhja, ꨒ, marks the “y” sound at the start of an Eastern Cham syllable, like the first sound in English “yes.” It is a consonant in Cham writing; its syllable can have a built-in vowel or added vowel marks. Eastern Cham also lists a separate letter, ꨢ, for the same sound, but the spellings are not established as interchangeable.

What ꨒ means

It marks a “y” sound at an Eastern Cham syllable’s start.

In the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), this sound is written /j/: the first sound in English “yes,” not the “j” in “jam.” A Cham consonant belongs to a syllable; its vowel may be built into the letter or written with a vowel mark.

Where does Cham writing come from?

Cham writing developed from Pallava, an Indian script.

Cham developed as Indian religions spread through Southeast Asia around 200 CE. The earliest known inscription is catalogued as C.174; the broader inscription record spans about 500–1500 CE. The script first served bureaucratic communication, then appeared in everyday writing and manuscripts.

Eastern Cham is used by Cham communities in southern Vietnam. Western Cham communities in Cambodia developed a different written history, with Arabic-based Jawi becoming common. By the mid-19th century, most Cambodian Muslims had shifted toward Jawi. In 2019, a minority still maintained akhar srak, the Cham-script manuscript tradition.

A Cham consonant read within an Eastern Cham syllable, not as a standalone word.

Do not replace ꨒ with ꨢ just because both can mark the same sound.

Why is ꨒ a box on my screen?

fsymbols draws rare signs with its own fonts, so they show here even where your device has none. An app or website without such a font shows an empty box (□) or a question mark instead. Turn our fonts off to see each sign as your device draws it by itself: a box here means a box in your chats and documents too.
