Malayalam letter tha

36/118

Malayalam ഥ is a tha sound made at the upper teeth with an extra puff of breath, distinct from ത. It appears within Malayalam words, especially Sanskrit-derived ones, and can form consonant clusters. Some speakers make the extra breath faint, but the spelling contrast remains.

What ഥ means

No. ഥ has an extra puff of breath; ത does not.

The tongue makes both sounds at the upper teeth. In Latin transliteration, ഥ is commonly written thha or ttha; “aspirated” means it comes with that extra puff of breath.

Speakers whose Malayalam is influenced by Tamil may make the breath subtle. The letters can then sound close, but the spelling still distinguishes them.

How did Malayalam writing develop?

The Vazhappally copper plate, dated c. 882/83 CE, records early Malayalam written in Vattezhuthu, an older script descended from Brahmi, alongside some Grantha characters.

Vattezhuthu appears in inscriptions and royal grants. Grantha characters entered Malayalam writing as the language took in Sanskrit vocabulary and grammar, and the modern alphabet grew through that contact. The link between the scripts is historical, not just a resemblance in their shapes.

Today, you are more likely to meet ഥ in Sanskrit-derived words, names, and formal writing than as an isolated sign; its pronunciation still varies by word and speaker.

How do I type ഥ?

On standard Malayalam INSCRIPT, use ShiftL.

Windows Malayalam Phonetic input turns a Latin transliteration into Malayalam suggestions; type the word in transliteration and choose the spelling containing ഥ. Microsoft’s Windows input documentation dated 2024-06-20 describes this method.

The standard Malayalam INSCRIPT layout checked 2026-09-05 maps L to ത and Shift+L to ഥ on a US keyboard. Some vowel signs are stored after a consonant but appear to its left or on both sides; this is normal shaping.

Neutral in Malayalam writing; its sound contrast is part of the spelling.

Do not swap ഥ for ത: the spoken difference can be faint, but they are different letters.

Questions people ask

2

Why can ഥ sound like its unaspirated partner?

Speakers whose Malayalam is influenced by Tamil may weaken the extra breath; the spelling still preserves the distinction.

Why is a vowel sign drawn before ഥ?

That is normal shaping. Some Malayalam vowel signs are stored after the consonant but appear to its left; two-part signs can appear on both sides.
