kayah li vowel e

Kayah Li Vowel E

40/48

ꤧ is the Kayah Li e vowel mark: it follows a carrier in text but is drawn above it, adding the syllable’s vowel. Native spellings place it over ꤢ; some loanword spellings use ꤣ as the carrier. A complete sequence is part of Kayah Li writing, and the letter name alone does not settle the sound.

Text symbol

What ꤧ means

It marks the vowel in a Kayah Li syllable. This Kayah Li vowel mark is written after its carrier but displayed above it. Native spellings use ꤢ as the carrier; some loanword spellings use ꤣ. The carrier and mark together make the readable unit, so ꤧ on its own is incomplete.

Htae Bu Phae devised the modern Kayah Li script in 1962, partly in response to Latin-based spellings that had appeared after 1950. Its order and some forms reflect Brahmic and Myanmar writing traditions, while most Kayah Li letter shapes developed independently. A separate Kayah Li spelling tradition uses Myanmar script and has related vowel marks; the direction of influence is unclear. In 2006, Kayah Li was being taught in refugee-camp schools in Thailand.

How to type ꤧ

Type a Kayah Li carrier, then this combining mark. Enter ꤢꤧ for a native spelling or ꤣꤧ in a loanword spelling. If a tone mark follows, keep ꤧ before it in the character order, even though ꤧ is drawn above the carrier.

If the mark floats, sits too high, or appears as a box, check the font and its Kayah Li support. Combining marks depend on font positioning, so the same character sequence can look different in different fonts.

Technical and language-specific: in Kayah Li text, it marks a vowel above its carrier.

A bare ꤧ is only part of a spelling; its carrier completes the syllable.

Questions people ask

2

Does ꤧ always mean the same e sound?

No. A 2006 encoding proposal calls it E, but a Western Kayah mapping updated 27 April, 2026 assigns ꤢꤧ /ɛ/ (the open e in “bed”) and ꤢꤩ /e/ (a closer, pure e sound). Follow the spelling system of the text.

Why is the Kayah Li e mark not showing?

Check the font first: it may lack Kayah Li coverage or correct combining-mark positioning. Keep the mark after its carrier in text order, even when the font displays it above.
