What 𑐌 means
It writes an o vowel at the start of a syllable. Use 𑐌 when the syllable begins with o. After a consonant, Newa uses 𑑀, the dependent O vowel sign; the two forms write the same vowel in different positions.
Newa is an abugida: consonant letters carry an inherent vowel, while other vowels are shown with attached signs. The script descends from Brahmi and was used for Nepal Bhasa, a language of the Newar people, and in different periods for Sanskrit, Nepali, Hindi, Bengali, and Maithili. Records include inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, and books.
The script is documented from the tenth century CE. Its use declined after the Newa dynasties fell in the late 18th century; it was banned in 1905, and the ban ended in 1951. Modern revival work links the script with Newar cultural preservation, education, and digital type design.
How do I type Newa letter O?
Use a Unicode input method your app supports. Windows Word/Outlook: type 1140C, then press AltX. Linux/GTK: press CtrlShiftU, type 1140C, then press Space or Enter.
macOS Unicode Hex Input does not handle characters above UFFFF; use Character Viewer instead. If you see a box, the selected font lacks a Newa glyph; choose a font with Newa coverage.
In heritage-text and teaching contexts, Newa script can signal interest in Newar cultural preservation.
A single Newa letter is opaque to anyone who cannot read the script.

1Why does 𑐌 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
