Myanmar Letter O

42/160

ဩ is a Burmese vowel letter for a higher-pitched “o” with a throat catch. It appears in ဩဝါဒ (“advice”) and abbreviates ဩဂုတ် (“August”); a 1993 Burmese dictionary records an old respectful use.

Text symbol

What ဩ means

It writes higher-pitched “o” with a brief throat catch. This one-letter form appears especially in Pali and Sanskrit loans.

Myanmar writing descends from a South Indian script related to Brahmi, an old South Asian writing system, borrowed to write the Mon language around the eighth century. Its first inscription dates to the eleventh century and uses an alphabet nearly identical to the Mon script. Those dates trace the script, not ဩ itself.

Questions people ask

1

Why does ဩ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
