Myanmar Letter A

34/160

The Burmese A, အ, is a Myanmar-script letter that can stand for an initial vowel; in Burmese it also serves as a base for spelling other standalone vowels. A standalone reading starts with a brief closure in the throat, and the rest of the syllable helps determine the exact vowel.

What အ means

In Burmese, it is both an A letter and a vowel carrier.

At the start of a syllable, အ can write a vowel that begins with a brief closure in the throat, called a glottal stop. The exact vowel sound can depend on the syllable ending, so the letter's reading follows the spelling around it.

Burmese commonly forms standalone vowels by adding vowel signs to this base, as in အာ. Separate independent-vowel letters such as ဣ are also used, especially in Pali and Sanskrit spellings.

Where did the Myanmar script come from?

Its roots reach South Indian writing related to Brahmi.

The earliest surviving writing from what is now Myanmar includes Pyu material from the second half of the fifth century. The Myanmar script appears in inscriptions by the eleventh century, with early letter forms close to Mon inscriptions. The standard account traces its immediate local route through Mon writing; historian Michael Aung-Thwin argues for a Pyu intermediary. Both connect it to South India but disagree on the local link.

The twelfth-century Myazedi stone inscription at Bagan places Burmese, Mon, Pyu, and Pali on one monument; it records a Buddhist donation. Writing in the script served Buddhist texts and offerings, royal records, and administration. Its early angular forms grew rounder around the seventeenth century, a change usually linked to writing on palm leaves, where straight strokes could split the surface.

When does this glyph render incorrectly?

Usually when the text's encoding and font do not match.

Myanmar text stores base letters and combining signs in logical order, then fonts shape them into syllables. Some vowel signs are stored after a base but displayed to its left, so screen position does not show typing order.

Unicode text shown with a Zawgyi font, or Zawgyi text shown with a Unicode font, can produce dots, overlaps, or incorrect shapes. Match the font to the text encoding; convert Zawgyi text to Unicode before using it in a Unicode document.

Questions people ask

1

Can one font display both Unicode and Zawgyi?

No. Unicode and Zawgyi reuse the same Myanmar code-point range for different encodings, so a font cannot automatically tell the encodings apart.
