What ရ means

It writes a consonant inside Burmese words.

The same letter also writes a Burmese word, pronounced roughly “yah,” meaning “get” or “receive.” After a verb it can mark ability or permission; with a future marker, obligation. Grammar tells you which meaning fits.

The wider Myanmar script developed from a Brahmi-related script from South India, brought to write Mon, a regional language, about the eighth century. Its earliest inscription dates to the eleventh century and closely resembles early Mon inscriptions. The script’s original letters were square; later they became round, traditionally said to reduce tearing on palm leaves. It writes Burmese, Mon, and other regional languages, as well as Pali and Sanskrit in Buddhist study and ordination texts.

Why does ရ sound like y?

Standard Burmese changed the sound while keeping the spelling.

The shift from an r sound to a y-like sound continued into the nineteenth century. In standard Burmese, this letter is usually pronounced like the y in “yes.”

Rakhine, also called Rakhaing or Arakanese, can preserve an r-like sound where standard Burmese has the y-like sound. Some words borrowed from Pali or English can also retain r.

How do I type ရ?

Use a Unicode Myanmar keyboard’s standalone ra key.

Unicode does not prescribe keyboard layouts, so the key position varies. A system character picker can also select the standalone letter.

A font, encoding, or character-order mismatch can make Myanmar text look broken. The standalone letter ရ is different from medial ra ြ: that sign attaches to a consonant, may wrap around it visually, and follows it in the encoded sequence.

Questions people ask

2

Why does Myanmar text look broken?

An incompatible font or Myanmar encoding is a common cause. Text in font-specific encodings such as Zawgyi may display incorrectly in a Unicode font; malformed character order can also cause dotted circles or overlaps.

Can this letter be used outside Burmese?

Yes. Myanmar script also writes Mon, Karen, Kayah, Shan, Palaung, and other regional languages, as well as Pali and Sanskrit. The sound follows the language being written.
