marchen letter pa

Marchen Letter Pa

15/68

𑱾 is the Marchen consonant pa, used in writing associated with the Tibetan Bön tradition. The script wrote Zhang-zhung in older texts and is also used for Tibetan in modern Bön literature; the unmarked letter can represent the syllable pa. The 2011 encoding proposal describes few known pre-modern examples, including an early Zhang-zhung inscription on a bronze seal held at Menri Monastery.

What 𑱾 means

It writes the consonant pa in Marchen. Marchen is an abugida: a script where each consonant letter carries an inherent a sound unless a vowel sign changes it. Thus 𑱾 can represent the syllable pa; surrounding writing shows its role in a Zhang-zhung or Tibetan word.

The 2011 encoding proposal describes Marchen as writing the extinct Zhang-zhung language in Bön texts; modern Bön literature also uses it for Tibetan. It says Marchen and the related Marchung script are reputed to come from ancient Zhang-zhung, a kingdom in western and northern Tibet before Buddhism arrived there in the 7th century. Few pre-modern examples are known. One of the earliest is a Zhang-zhung inscription on a bronze seal held at Menri Monastery.

The 2011 encoding proposal groups Marchen with four other Bön scripts: Marchung, Pungchen, Pungchung, and Drusha. It describes Marchen's overall letterforms as distinct from standard Tibetan and Lantsa, apart from similar subjoined forms of wa, ya, and ra—the smaller forms placed below a letter.

Why does Marchen pa stack?

Marchen builds vertical consonant stacks and needs complex shaping. A base letter can combine with smaller subjoined consonants, placed below it, and vowel signs. Noto Sans Marchen documentation describes complex text layout for arranging these pieces, so an assembled stack can change a line's height.

Marchen runs left to right but has no tsheg, the mark used between syllables in Tibetan writing. The 2011 encoding proposal says boundaries can therefore be ambiguous and suggests a zero-width space when software needs an explicit syllable break.

A 2026-09-14 check of BabelStone's Marchen-font notes reports a deep-stack i-vowel-height issue under Windows 10 or HarfBuzz. If the vowel sits oddly, check the font and shaping system before reading 𑱾 as a different letter.

Why does 𑱾 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.

If 𑱾 appears as a box, use a font with Marchen coverage. Stacked letters also need a shaping-capable text system, so basic glyph coverage may not be enough.
