multani letter pa

Multani Letter Pa

25/38

𑊛 is the Multani letter for the p sound, read as part of a word. Multani was used to write Saraiki and for routine and commercial records; Arabic script later replaced it as the standard in Sindh. In an ordinary message, treat 𑊛 as a historical letter that needs context: a box or altered outline points to font support or historical style.

Text symbol

What 𑊛 means

It represents the p sound in Multani words.

Multani was used to write Saraiki around Multan and northern Sindh, including everyday and commercial writing. 𑊛 is a letter read inside a word; alone, it gives no reliable message beyond identifying a letter.

Is Multani script still used?

Not as an everyday writing system.

A manuscript of the Lord’s Prayer in Multani (Saraiki) dates to the 1730s and is held in a Russian archive. The earliest printed specimen in the cited record is a New Testament from 1819; printed and handwritten examples are documented through 1916.

In the latter half of the nineteenth century, British administration made Arabic script the standard for Sindh’s languages. Multani continued into the twentieth century before becoming obsolete. It belongs to the Landa family of scripts: Gurmukhi is connected through that family, while Khudawadi and Khojki are more distant relatives.

Fonts change its outline; missing fonts show a box

Multani has no single standard outline. Unicode’s chart shows one form; historical printed and handwritten forms vary, so fonts may draw 𑊛 differently without changing its identity.

If it appears as a box, your font lacks Multani coverage. Use a font with Multani support; a similar-looking letter from another script is not a substitute.

Archival and specialist; in everyday chat, a lone 𑊛 needs surrounding text.

A lone 𑊛 may read as an unexplained historical letter; don’t use it as an ordinary stand-in for p.
