What 𑩲 means
It is a consonant letter with an inherent “a” vowel.
Soyombo is an abugida: a writing system where each consonant letter carries a default vowel. In Mongolian, 𑩲 starts the syllable “ba”; a vowel sign changes that vowel, while a final sign or a consonant written underneath changes the syllable’s ending or forms a consonant cluster.
For Sanskrit transcription, this common ba letter can stand for an unaspirated “p” (a p made without a strong puff of air); a separate Galig letter, used for foreign sounds, represents “b.” So “ba” names the letter, not its sound in every language.
Why was the Soyombo script created?
It was designed for Buddhist writing across several languages.
Zanabazar created the script at Tövkhön in 1686. Its letter shapes drew on Lantsa and Devanagari models, and its syllable structure could represent Sanskrit and Tibetan sounds in Buddhist texts. Zanabazar also created the related Zanabazar Square script.
Soyombo appears in Buddhist manuscripts and inscriptions. Its opening head mark, 𑪞, is used as Mongolia’s national emblem; it is not this ba letter.
A letter for Soyombo spelling and transcription; its sound depends on the language written.
The national Soyombo emblem is a separate head mark, not this ba letter.
