Malayalam letter va

വ is Malayalam va, a consonant for a v-like sound, read as va when no vowel-changing mark is attached. It appears within words; vowel signs and consonant combinations alter how you read and recognize it. Its sound can also resemble w.

Text symbol

What വ means

It represents va, with a built-in short a vowel. The Malayalam v sound is written /ʋ/ in phonetic notation: a sound between v and w. A description of the Namboodiri dialect records both v-like and w-like pronunciations.

The letter belongs to a script shaped by Vatteluttu and Grantha. Vatteluttu, an older script used for Tamil and Malayalam, probably developed from Tamil-Brahmi and appears in southern Indian stone inscriptions from the 4th century. The Vazhappally copper-plate inscription records early Malayalam using Vatteluttu with some Grantha letters. Its dating varies: 830 is cited, while another proposal places it around 882-83.

Grantha supplied letters for Sanskrit sounds missing from Vatteluttu; the scripts mixed in Manipravalam, a literary style combining Malayalam and Sanskrit. Malayalam and Tigalari are sister scripts descended from Grantha. The Malayalam script also writes Paniya, Betta Kurumba and Ravula, other South Indian languages.

What does it mean when someone sends വ?

Ask for the surrounding word or sentence. An isolated വ identifies a letter; the surrounding Malayalam text gives you the message.

Why does Malayalam va change shape?

Vowel marks and joined consonants change its appearance. An attached vowel sign replaces the built-in a. The mark called candrakkala can suppress that vowel and connect consonants into a cluster. Doubling va produces വ്വ; after sa, it forms സ്വ, pronounced sva, with a compact va.

Fonts can draw the same sequence differently. The invisible formatting characters ZWNJ and ZWJ control joining: ZWNJ after candrakkala requests its visible form; ZWJ before candrakkala requests a traditional joined form, if available.

Why does വ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
