What 𞋚 means
It represents the /h/ consonant, not the entire “ha” syllable.
Wancho is an alphabet, so vowels have their own letters. “Ha” is the letter’s name; this character does not include an a vowel.
By itself, it marks a sound; the surrounding Wancho word supplies the meaning.
Why was the Wancho script created?
To write Wancho sounds and tones more faithfully.
Wancho teacher Banwang Losu developed the script between 2001–2012 after a school assignment showed him that Roman letters could not capture some Wancho sounds and tones. He published a book about the script in 2013. Before then, Wancho was also written in Latin and Devanagari. The alphabet’s letterforms draw on local visual forms, including people, animals, birds, plants, tools, and tattoo marks.
