newa letter ha

Newa Letter Ha

53/97

Use a Newa Nepal Lipi keyboard or converter, plus a font with Newa support. In Nepal Bhasa writing, 𑐴 is the consonant h, not an emoji or mood symbol. Its story runs from medieval manuscripts through suppression to modern revival.

What 𑐴 means

Use a Newa keyboard or converter, then check the font.

For repeated writing, use a romanized or traditional Newa Nepal Lipi keyboard; a Devanagari-to-Newa converter is another documented route. For a one-off, copy it from the palette above.

If you get a box or blank, select a font with Newa support such as Noto Sans Newa. That is missing font coverage, not a different meaning.

What does 𑐴 mean?

It is the Newa-script consonant h.

In Newar Nepal Bhasa it stands for the sound /h/. Newa is an abugida, where a plain consonant carries an inherent vowel until a vowel sign or virama changes it. Alone it is still a letter, not an emotional signal.

The earliest reported Newa example is a 908 CE Lankavatara Sutra manuscript, a Buddhist text. After Newar rule ended in 1769 use declined; a 1905 Rana ban suppressed script and language until 1951, with organized revival strengthening in the 1980s. Surviving uses include inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, books, and religious and literary texts.

Why does 𑐴 change shape in combinations?

Its neighbours and vowel signs can change its drawn shape.

A virama removes the inherent vowel and helps build consonant clusters. If a font lacks the conjunct, it may leave the virama visible instead of fusing the letters. Ha also takes special forms with u, uu and vocalic vowel signs, as in 𑐴𑑂𑐫.

Neutral inside Newa writing; outside it, the character signals script or language context rather than emotion.

Do not send it alone expecting the recipient to read an emoji-like feeling.

Drift: As of 2026, Newa is being revived for Nepal Bhasa, while Devanagari remains the language's more common script. (as of as of 2026)

Questions people ask

2

Is 𑐴 an emoji?

No. It is a Newa-script letter, so it does not carry a built-in emoji meaning.

Why does 𑐴 show as a box?

It can, when the active font lacks Newa glyphs. Select a font with Newa support; the text is not a different symbol.
