newa vowel sign aa

Newa Vowel Sign Aa

54/97

𑐵 is a dependent Newa vowel sign: after a consonant it marks the long a vowel and never stands alone as a letter. Newa is an abugida, so consonants carry an inherent vowel and this dependent vowel changes the syllable. Its shape can change with the consonant, though the stored sign stays the same.

What 𑐵 means

It changes a consonant's inherent vowel to long a.

Newa is a Brahmi-derived abugida: a consonant supplies an inherent vowel, and a dependent vowel sign changes that syllable. So this dependent vowel belongs after a consonant; for a vowel-initial syllable, use the independent Newa letter aa, 𑐁, instead.

The formal label says “aa,” but 2026 orthography notes for Kathmandu Newar also map 𑐵 to an aæ value. Read that as a language-and-dialect distinction, not a promise that one mark sounds the same in every language.

Why does 𑐵 change shape with some consonants?

The Newa font picks a contextual form for headless consonants.

After ga, nya, ttha, nna, tha, dha, or sha, the sign takes a contextual form. These are Newa's headless consonants, so the visible mark can differ even though the stored character is unchanged.

A font may also place the sign away from the typed order. If a syllable looks broken or unassembled, you need Newa shaping support, not a different character.

Where does Newa vowel-sign writing come from?

It grew in the Newa script tradition, long before Unicode.

The script is Brahmi-based and its early witnesses include old manuscripts, inscriptions, coins, and books. It developed as a manuscript and inscription tradition of the Newar people, not as an invented computer symbol.

Newa is historically related to other Nepalese scripts such as Ranjana and Bhujimol, and it has been used for Nepal Bhasa, Sanskrit, Nepali, Maithili, Bengali, and Hindi. In 2026, Nepal Bhasa is most often written in Devanagari, although Newa remains in current use.

Neutral technical text: it marks a vowel inside a Newa syllable, not a reaction or emoji.

A lone 𑐵 is incomplete; pair it with its consonant base.

Questions people ask

1

Why is 𑐵 displayed somewhere other than where I typed it?

That is expected. In a shaped Newa syllable, the sign is stored after its consonant base, while the font may place it in the visually correct position.
