ahom letter ha

Ahom Letter Ha

18/65

𑜑 is the Ahom ha consonant with an inherent a, so by itself it forms a syllable. The Tai Ahom script wrote the Tai Ahom language in northeast India; priests kept it in religious practice after everyday use declined, and later publishing revived it. An Ahom vowel mark can appear on a different side from its position in the text.

What 𑜑 means

The Ahom letter ha carries the inherent vowel a. That makes bare 𑜑 an open syllable, not a consonant with no vowel. Add a vowel sign to change the syllable; a visible killer sign, 𑜫, removes the inherent a when the consonant closes a syllable. The Ahom e sign is stored after its consonant but rendered before it.

The script developed to write the Tai Ahom language in northeast India. Its oldest surviving text is the Snake Pillar inscription, associated with King Siuw Hum Miung (1497–1539); other records appear on coins, brass plates, and bark manuscripts. The earliest dated evidence is from the sixteenth century. Everyday use of Tai Ahom declined after the late 17th century, but priests used the language and script in religious practice through the 19th century. A print revival began in 1920 with an Ahom-Assamese-English dictionary, followed by dictionaries, word lists, and primers. By 2025, computer publishing had helped Ahom appear in books in Assam.

Ahom grew within the Lik Tai tradition

Ahom developed within the Lik Tai tradition, a family of scripts used for Tai languages. Its early letterforms share features with Old Mon and Old Burmese, but historians differ over which was the closest model. That history links writing traditions; it does not establish that 𑜑 has an exact counterpart in either script.

On its own, 𑜑 is best read as a letter specimen or a reference to Ahom writing. In a word, the surrounding spelling supplies its role.
