Ahom Sign Killer

42/65

𑜫, the Ahom sign killer or Ahom virama, marks the preceding consonant as vowelless, usually at a syllable’s end or inside a consonant cluster. Modern Ahom spelling requires it for final consonants. It stays visible instead of fusing consonants into one glyph.

What 𑜫 means

It tells you the consonant before it has no inherent vowel. Ahom is an abugida, a writing system where consonant letters carry a default vowel unless another sign changes it. This visible virama follows the consonant it changes; it does not fuse adjoining consonants into one glyph.

Modern Ahom spelling requires this mark for final consonants, while older manuscripts do not apply the rule consistently. The Tai Ahom language began to decline as a spoken language in the late seventeenth century; priests kept using the script in religious practice through the nineteenth century. A revival is documented by an Ahom-Assamese-English dictionary published in 1920.

The oldest surviving Ahom text is the Snake Pillar, a stone inscription from the 1497–1539 reign of King Siuw Hum Miung; Ahom coins provide evidence from 1539–1552. Many surviving manuscripts were copied in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries. Ahom belongs to the wider Lik Tai script tradition; scholars note shared features with Pagan inscriptions, from a medieval Burmese kingdom, dated to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and have suggested Old Mon or Old Burmese influence.

Why might it appear as a box or float?

It needs an Ahom-capable font and the right order. This is a combining mark, which means it sits against the consonant before it. A font without Ahom support may show a missing-glyph box, leave the mark floating, or omit it. Check font support before changing the character order.

It belongs to Ahom spelling; outside that setting, it reads as a writing-system mark, not a conversational signal.

“Killer” means cancelling a vowel here, not violence.

Questions people ask

1

Does the killer go before or after the consonant?

After. Ahom places it after the consonant whose inherent vowel it removes.
