Devanagari Virama

78/128

् is the Devanagari halant, or “vowel killer”: it removes a consonant’s built-in vowel. It helps write consonants without a following vowel and groups of consonants. In a joined letter such as क्ष, the mark can be present in the text without appearing as a separate stroke.

Text symbol

What ् means

It removes the preceding consonant’s built-in vowel. In Sanskrit sound notation, क is ka; क् is k. The halant also links consonants: क् ष can appear as क्ष, a joined form called a conjunct.

Spelling and pronunciation do not always match mark for mark. Hindi can omit the built-in vowel in speech without writing a halant. Tamil’s pulli and Bangla’s hasant serve parallel vowel-suppressing roles in their own scripts.

The script evolved over centuries: Brahmi is attested in inscriptions from the third century BCE; Proto-Nagari emerged toward the end of the sixth century CE. By the eleventh century, Devanagari was important for Sanskrit literature. These are script-history milestones, not dates for the invention of ्.

Why does ् disappear?

Your font can absorb it into a joined letter. Text-shaping software turns the stored characters into visible forms: a combined shape, a reduced consonant called a half form, or consonants with a visible halant. The underlying ् remains in the text.

Invisible joining controls can change that result. Use the options in How to type when you need an explicit halant or want to request a half form.

A spelling mark, not a standalone reaction.

Do not add ् as decoration: it changes how a consonant is read.

Can ् stand alone?

Only as an isolated sign, not a complete syllable. It normally attaches to a consonant; displayed alone, it may acquire a dotted circle showing the missing base.
