Thai Character Phinthu

58/87

ฺ is phinthu, the Thai-script virama: a small mark placed below a consonant to cancel its built-in vowel when Pali or Sanskrit is written in Thai letters. It spells out consonant clusters and syllable-final consonants, and it never stands alone.

Text symbol

What ฺ means

It cancels a consonant's built-in vowel. Every Thai consonant letter carries an implied vowel, so a letter that must be read bare needs a mark. In Thai spellings of Pali and Sanskrit — the classical languages of Buddhist scripture — phinthu sits below the letter to do that job; the dot itself has no message meaning.

The form grew with printing, not in one invention. The 1893 Chulachomklao edition of the Tipitaka — the Buddhist canon, printed in Siamese, an older name for the Thai script — already distinguished final, non-final, and clustered consonants. A Thai religious-education history dates the simplified phinthu system to 1919, when a solid dot below the consonant replaced more elaborate marks to make Pali texts easier to print and study.

It belongs inside a Pali or Sanskrit spelling.

Its cousins are the virama marks of other scripts descended from Brahmi, the ancient writing system behind most scripts of South and Southeast Asia. Each script keeps its own glyph and shaping rules, so the marks do the same job but are not interchangeable.

Thai reference works also use phinthu in pronunciation notes, dissecting clusters and word histories; a Royal Society of Thailand guide notes that general readers may not recognize it. That is specialist notation, not an everyday meaning.

On screen it exists only attached to a base. Thai font shaping places it under its consonant, while some older Thai fonts use private-use fallback forms instead — so the same text can shift or break across fonts. Judge the consonant-plus-mark sequence, never the floating dot.

Technical and specialist: it marks Pali or Sanskrit spelling in Thai script, not casual tone.

A lone ฺ is incomplete — attach it to a base consonant, as in กฺ.

Questions people ask

2

Why does ฺ look wrong by itself?

Nothing's wrong — it is a combining mark with no letter of its own. Alone, apps show it floating or parked on a dotted circle; put a consonant first, as in กฺ, and it settles underneath.

Can I add phinthu to any Thai consonant?

No — only where a Pali or Sanskrit spelling needs a consonant read without its vowel. It is not a general mark for everyday Thai words.
