javanese letter a

Javanese Letter A

5/91

ꦄ is the standalone Javanese vowel letter for a. It marks an explicit initial a, especially to distinguish names and foreign words; ordinary native words commonly write initial a with ꦲ instead. A square glyph points to missing font or text-shaping support.

Text symbol

What ꦄ means

It marks an independent initial vowel a.

In Javanese, ꦄ is an aksara swara, or independent vowel letter, used especially to distinguish proper names and foreign words. Ordinary native words commonly write initial a on ꦲ. A 1997 Unicode proposal also described independent vowels for Sanskrit, Arabic or Dutch loanwords beginning with a vowel.

Javanese script evolved from Kawi, an older Javanese script descended from the Pallava script of South India and ultimately from Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system. It is historically related to Balinese script. Javanese manuscripts carried religious, legal, heroic, moral and historical works. A 2025 epigraphic study dates Old Javanese documents in Central Java to 743 and 787 CE, earlier than the previously cited 804 benchmark; those dates attest the script tradition, not this exact letter.

Why does ꦄ appear as a square?

Missing font or shaping support can break its display.

Javanese writing needs software that groups marks into syllables. Microsoft's 2022 typography guidance notes that applications differ in how they mark text as Javanese; fallback can show a square or a malformed letter.

Outside Javanese spelling, ꦄ signals a deliberate reference to Javanese script.

Do not use ꦄ for every initial a; ordinary native words may use ꦲ.

Drift: As of 2026, Latin script had reduced Javanese script's everyday role, while teaching, heritage work and Yogyakarta signage kept it visible.

Why does ꦄ show as a box on some devices?

Not every system ships a font for the Javanese block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
