Kannada letter A

It is Kannada’s independent vowel for short a. “Independent” means it is a full letter, not a mark attached to a consonant. It writes the a sound at the start of a vowel-led syllable; after a consonant, Kannada normally leaves that same sound implicit.

Kannada writing descends from Brahmi through southern Indian scripts. Early Telugu–Kannada writing—the shared predecessor of today’s Telugu and Kannada scripts—appears in inscriptions from the fourth to seventh centuries CE. The Halmidi inscription, around 450 CE, records a land grant and is identified as the earliest Kannada inscription. Telugu അ is a historical counterpart, but each letter belongs to its own script.

Why does a Kannada consonant already include a?

An unmarked consonant already carries an a vowel. So ಕ represents k with its built-in short a, often written ka in Latin transliteration, unless a vowel sign changes it. The virama mark cancels that inherent vowel. A dependent vowel sign changes the vowel attached to the consonant, as in ಕಾ.

Kannada’s dependent vowel signs follow the consonant in reading order, even when a sign is drawn beside it. The Kannada script also writes Tulu, Beary, Konkani, Havyaka, and Kodava, among other languages; by itself, ಅ identifies a script and vowel role, not a whole language.

How do I type ಅ?

Choose a Kannada phonetic method or INSCRIPT layout. A phonetic method turns typed Latin letters into Kannada choices; INSCRIPT assigns Kannada characters to keys on a script layout.

As of September 2026, Windows provides Kannada INSCRIPT and Kannada Phonetic layouts, while Google Input Tools lists Kannada transliteration and Inscript and Phonetic keyboards. If Latin a does not produce ಅ, check the active method: phonetic input uses sound-based typing and may offer a candidate to select; INSCRIPT follows its layout’s key positions.
