What అ means
అ writes a vowel syllable on its own. It begins the Telugu vowel set, called achulu. Consonants already include a built-in a: క reads “ka” without adding అ.
The script evolved from Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system, through shared Telugu-Kannada forms attested in the 4th–7th centuries CE. Telugu-language inscriptions begin in the 6th–7th centuries CE; Telugu becomes distinct by the 13th century CE. It served grants and religious texts, on stone and in palm-leaf manuscripts.
Fonts can change అ’s outline, not which letter it is.

1Why does అ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
