Kannada Letter Aa

What sound does ಆ represent?

It is the independent long-a vowel.

Use it at the start of a syllable that begins with this vowel. Its short counterpart is ಅ. After a consonant, Kannada writes the same long vowel with dependent sign ಾ, as in ಕಾ.

How did the Kannada aa letter develop?

It belongs to a script tradition that developed from Brahmi.

Brahmi writing traditions are visible in the Ashokan edicts from the third-century BCE. Early Telugu-Kannada script forms are documented in inscriptions of the Kadambas and Chalukyas from the 4th–7th centuries CE. The Halmidi inscription, from about the 5th century CE, is considered the earliest Kannada-language inscription.

These inscriptions recorded political, social, economic, and religious matters. By the 9th century, Kannada had an established literary and everyday written role, after earlier inscriptional settings dominated by Prakrit and Sanskrit. The Telugu connection is historical: early Telugu-Kannada forms were used across both regions; similar curves alone do not prove a relationship.
