What ॲ means
It writes Marathi /æ/, as in English “bat.” By itself, ॲ is a vowel letter; after a consonant, the mark ॅ forms spellings such as कॅ and बॅट.
The comparable letter in Hindi materials is ऍ. An older Kashmiri Devanagari convention used ॲ for a different vowel, /ə/; a revision in 2009 assigned that value to ॳ. A Marathi learner's book listed ॲ among the vowels in 2002, and a Unicode proposal in 2007 argued for encoding it as one character rather than as अ ॅ.

Don't confuse it with
1अॅ अॅ is अ followed by ॅ, so it contains two characters. ॲ is one character, even when the two forms look alike.
Questions people ask
1Why does ॲ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
