Telugu Letter Cha

26/100

ఛ is Telugu's ch sound with an extra puff of air, unlike plain చ. Its Latin spellings, chha and chh, mark this breathy consonant in Telugu words, especially those derived from Sanskrit and Prakrit; informal speech may soften the puff.

What ఛ means

ఛ marks a ch sound followed by an extra puff of air.

English “church” starts with a close ch sound; release a brief burst of air after it. In Latin transliteration, chha or chh marks the breath; plain cha can hide the difference.

On its own, this consonant carries a short a sound. A vowel sign changes it; the virama mark removes it.

Why does Telugu need ఛ?

It writes the breathy member of Telugu's ch pair.

Telugu script developed from Brahmi, an ancient Indian script, through a writing stage shared with Kannada. Early Telugu-Kannada writing appears in inscriptions from the 4th–7th centuries CE. The Kalamalla record, around 575 CE, is among the earliest complete Telugu inscriptions; Telugu is described as a distinct script by the 13th century CE.

Traditional Telugu grammar groups ఛ among the “hard” consonants, contrasting it with softer sounds in native Telugu words. It preserves an aspirated consonant in some words borrowed from Sanskrit and Prakrit, two older languages that contributed vocabulary to Telugu.

How do I type ఛ?

Use a Telugu keyboard layout or phonetic input.

In the Linux XKB InScript map, Shift ; gives ఛ, while plain ; gives చ. The Fedora ITRANS table accepts Ch or chh for the consonant; add a vowel to make a syllable.

Some phonetic tools first produce ఛ్, the vowelless form. The virama removes Telugu's built-in short vowel; in a consonant cluster, the next letter may appear below it. A zero-width non-joiner, a formatting character, can block that joining and leave the virama visible.

Careful speech may preserve more of the breath in Sanskrit-influenced words; informal speech can soften it.

Keep it distinct from plain చ when the source spelling matters.
