newa letter ja

Newa Letter Ja

23/97

𑐖 is the Newa script consonant ja, pronounced with the script's built-in vowel. In a syllable, the next vowel mark or consonant changes what you read; alone, it is only one piece of a word. Read it as writing, not as a free-standing emblem.

Text symbol

What 𑐖 means

It is the Newa consonant transliterated j.

Newa is an alphabet where every consonant carries a built-in vowel unless changed. So 𑐖 reads as ja by itself, close to the English j sound. A vowel sign, a small mark added to the letter, changes that syllable; a virama, a silencing mark, removes the vowel so 𑐖 can join the next consonant. That is why 𑐖 alone is not a complete word.

Where did Newa writing come from?

It developed from Brahmi-derived writing in the Kathmandu Valley.

The script's earliest recorded use is a Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, a Buddhist scripture, manuscript dated 908 CE. Its documented ancestry runs through northern Gupta writing and relates it to Devanagari, Bengali, and Tirhuta. It was used for inscriptions, coins, manuscripts, books, and public notices, carrying Newar, Sanskrit, and Nepali. Ranjana, Bhujimol, Kutila, Golmol, and Litumol are other scripts in the Newar tradition, not variant forms of 𑐖.

Why does 𑐖 also signal heritage?

Its history shifted Newa from everyday script to revival work.

Newa stayed in active use until Gorkha rule ended Newar dynasties in 1769. Use then declined, and the Rana government banned the Newar script and language in 1905; the ban was lifted in 1951. Revival organizations gained momentum in the 1980s, and the Nepal Lipi Guthi developed a standard in 1989.

As of 2026, Newar is mostly written in Devanagari, while revival and preservation work promotes Newa and digitizes endangered manuscripts.

A lone 𑐖 is specialist writing, not a reaction or mood marker; in Newa text it performs a letter's job.

Use it as a Newa letter, not as a decorative stand-in for Latin j.

Questions people ask

2

Can 𑐖 replace the Devanagari letter ज?

No. They are historically related, but 𑐖 belongs to Newa script; use ज only when you intend Devanagari.

Why does 𑐖 show as an empty box?

Font problem. The character is present, but the current font lacks a Newa glyph or shaping support.
