What ꦗ means
On the Java Kongres layout, lowercase j produces ꦗ.
To type a consonant cluster, enter pangkon—the mark that cancels a consonant’s built-in vowel—before the next consonant. Shaping software may display the letters as a joined cluster.
What does the Javanese letter ꦗ mean?
It is a Javanese consonant written ja, with a built-in vowel.
Here, ja is the Latin spelling used to identify the letter. Javanese script gives a bare consonant an unstated vowel; vowel marks can change it, while pangkon cancels it so a syllable can end in a consonant. So ꦗ is a building block inside a word, not a complete word by itself.
Javanese script evolved from Kawi rather than appearing as a one-off invention. The Aji Saka origin story belongs to Javanese tradition; the historical script lineage runs through Kawi. The earliest related Old Javanese evidence includes the Kesongo and Disunuh inscriptions, dated 743 CE and 787 CE, placing Old Javanese writing in the eighth century. Modern Javanese script developed from Kawi in the 14th–15th centuries and served inscriptions, religious and legal texts, heroic literature, and everyday communication.
The script was also used to write Sanskrit, Old Javanese (Jawa Kuna), Kawi texts, Sundanese, and Sasak. Balinese and Sundanese are historically related writing traditions. After Indonesian was declared the national language in 1928, Latin-script writing became dominant in public use, while Javanese script continued in use.
Why does ꦗ render differently?
The font and shaping software determine its cluster form.
On its own, ꦗ appears as a single letter. In a consonant cluster, it may appear in a subjoined form—a smaller form attached below another letter—or as separate pieces if a joined stack would collide. Both layouts represent the same letter.
Neutral as a letter; using it in text signals Javanese-script writing.
A bare ꦗ is not a complete word; its vowel and cluster role depend on nearby letters and marks.

1Questions people ask
1Why does ꦗ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
