What 𞋃 means
It is the “ch” consonant in “chair.”
The Latin letter c is used to write this sound in Latin-script Wancho, but it is a different character. Wancho writes vowels with their own letters, and neighboring consonants do not fuse into a special shape. A box in place of 𞋃 means the active font lacks Wancho coverage.
In 2001, Banwang Losu began developing the modern script after Latin spelling made a Wancho school translation difficult: sound differences could change a word’s meaning. In his example, mai can mean “good,” “tail,” or “meat,” depending on the length of its last syllable. He presented an alphabet list in 2012 and published a primer in 2013. As of 2026, Latin and Devanagari remain more common ways to write Wancho.

Questions people ask
1Why does 𞋃 show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Wancho block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
