What ച means
It writes the Malayalam “ch” consonant inside words.
Its sound is like the “ch” in “chair.” The letter name is commonly written cha, while a scholarly transliteration writes ca. The letter normally carries a built-in vowel; a following vowel sign changes it, and candrakkala removes it.
In ച്ഛ, candrakkala follows ച before ഛ. The sequence can shape as a joined consonant cluster or remain open.
How did ച become part of Malayalam writing?
Its script grew through older South Indian writing traditions.
The Vazhappally copper plate, an inscription on copper, is among the earliest surviving Malayalam records. Accounts date it to c. 882–83 CE and about 830 CE, so it does not give this letter a firm start date.
Vatteluttu was used for local Tamil and Malayalam writing, while Grantha was used for Sanskrit. In Manipravalam, a literary style mixing Malayalam and Sanskrit, writers drew on both traditions. Modern Malayalam follows the Grantha-derived branch. Vatteluttu and Grantha trace separately to Brahmi, an older South Asian script; Tigalari is another descendant of Grantha.
How do I type ച?
The key depends on your Malayalam input layout.
On standard InScript, ; types ച and : types ഛ. With Mozhi transliteration, type ch for ച and chh for ഛ; these are different input methods, so there is no single English-key shortcut.
Malayalam shaping can make vowel signs appear beside or around a consonant. Virama sequences and invisible joiner or non-joiner controls can affect whether consonants join or stay open.
Neutral written Malayalam; neighboring vowel marks determine how the syllable is read.

1Why does ച look split or joined?
Font shaping can display a Malayalam consonant sequence as a joined cluster or an open string. Virama and invisible joiner controls affect the form, and fonts can draw the same sequence differently.
