What 𑒔 means

It is the Tirhuta consonant transliterated as ca. In Tirhuta writing, a consonant normally carries an inherent a vowel. A vowel sign changes it; virama suppresses it so the consonant can join a cluster.

Tirhuta developed from Gauḍī, also called Proto-Bengali, in the Kuṭila branch of Brahmi, an ancient Indian script tradition. Temple inscriptions in Bihar and Nepal are recorded from the thirteenth century. By the fourteenth century, Tirhuta had developed into a distinct script; it was used for Sanskrit before becoming Maithili’s principal written script.

Tirhuta was Maithili’s main script until Devanagari became dominant in the twentieth century. It continued in religious texts, family genealogies, letters, signage, and some Bihar exams. Digitized Tirhuta fonts brought basic computer support in the 1990s.

Why does 𑒔 resemble Bengali?

Tirhuta and Bengali share an older script ancestry. Tirhuta, Bengali, Newari, and Odia scripts descend from Gauḍī. That shared history explains their relationship, but their spelling and consonant-cluster behavior differ. Bengali চ is related in script history, yet it is not a Tirhuta substitute.

Maithili has also been written in Kaithi, Newari, and Devanagari. A Maithili text can belong to one of those script traditions; their letters are not interchangeable with Tirhuta letters.

How do I type 𑒔?

Enter cha in a Tirhuta transliteration layout. The published mapping in the Malar Tirhuta keyboard assigns cha to 𑒔 and chha to the next letter, 𑒕. These are input labels, not the letters’ Unicode names.

A vowel sign after the consonant changes its inherent vowel; virama removes that vowel so it can join a consonant cluster. A square can appear when font coverage or shaping support is missing, even if the text is valid.
