What ᤇ means
It marks Limbu’s breathed ch sound. Say a ch like the one in “chair,” then release a brief puff of air; Latin spellings often write it “chh.” By itself, the letter carries a short built-in, o-like vowel, which a vowel sign changes.
Why is Limbu writing politically important?
Its writing has carried language, ritual, and cultural identity.
The script’s origins are disputed. Historical accounts credit Sirijanga with introducing or reviving it, while descent from a much older lost writing system is not securely established. A British Library catalogue records a Limbu alphabet practice book from the early 18th century; that shows the script was in use by then, not who first created it.
Limbu writing has carried oral tradition, religious books, and teaching. Suppression and restricted printing made its use a marker of cultural autonomy; publishing and religious revival have also tied it to Limbu identity. Limbu is a Brahmic-derived script. Scholarship links its design with Lepcha, notes partial visual resemblances to Tibetan writing, and describes later adjustments toward Devanagari reading habits.
