soyombo letter ca

Soyombo letter ca

18/83

𑩡 is a consonant letter in the Soyombo script, used to build written syllables. Tibetan and Sanskrit transliterations call its value ca; Mongolian descriptions sometimes write the corresponding value in Latin letters as ǰa. Soyombo was created for Mongolian, Sanskrit, and Tibetan writing, especially Buddhist texts. The emblem on Mongolia’s flag is a separate Soyombo sign, not this letter.

Text symbol

What 𑩡 means

It marks a consonant inside a Soyombo syllable.

Soyombo’s consonant names follow the Tibetan alphabetical order, which gives this letter the label ca. Mongolian descriptions may transliterate the corresponding sound as ǰa. On its own, 𑩡 is a sample letter, not a complete word.

Why was Soyombo script created?

It joined Mongolian writing with Buddhist Sanskrit and Tibetan texts.

Zanabazar created Soyombo in 1686 for Mongolian, Sanskrit, and Tibetan writing, especially Buddhist prayers and religious texts. He also developed Zanabazar Square, a related script for the same languages. Soyombo’s forms were modeled on Devanagari; some punctuation marks correspond to Tibetan and Devanagari signs. Historical examples are mainly Buddhist manuscripts and inscriptions in Central Asia, including inscriptions on prayer wheels, official seals, and temples.

Is Soyombo letter ca Mongolia’s national symbol?

No. Mongolia’s flag uses a separate Soyombo head mark, not this letter.

That emblem is a decorated sign showing the moon, sun, and triple flame. 𑩡 is one consonant in the script; the head mark is a national emblem.

A historical script letter; alone, 𑩡 reads as a Soyombo writing sample, not casual message tone.

Do not mistake 𑩡 for Mongolia’s emblem; that is the separate head mark 𑪞.

Why does Soyombo letter ca show as a square?

That means the active font lacks a Soyombo glyph. Switch to a font that supports the script; the stored character and its on-screen drawing are separate.

Why do two fonts draw Soyombo letter ca differently?

They can. The sample shape in Unicode charts is a guide, not a required design; supported fonts can draw the same character with different outlines.
