What ຕ means
It is an unaspirated t, used chiefly at syllable beginnings. Say it without a strong puff of air, like the t in “stay.” Its middle consonant class works with the vowel, syllable ending, and tone mark to set tone. Lao normally writes final t with ດ. A vowel sign shown to the left of ຕ is entered before it but pronounced after it.
Lao and Thai scripts are related
Fak Kham, a writing style linked to the Sukhothai kingdom, is identified as a prototype for Lao writing. The earliest apparently genuine Lao-script inscription is dated 1494.
In Lan Xang, Lao Buhan, an older Lao script, was used for secular texts. Tham script from Lan Na served mainly for Pali and religious writing.

Questions people ask
1Why does ຕ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
