What ๛ means
It closes a chapter or document. In ๚ะ๛, ๚ะ marks a long break and ๛ closes the larger unit. A late-Ayutthaya manuscript—a text from an earlier Thai kingdom—uses it at a story’s end.
When did ๛ first appear?
An early trace is an inverted form on a stone inscription at Wat Si Chum in Sukhothai. The inscription is dated to the late fourteenth to mid-fifteenth century; this dates surviving evidence, not the mark’s invention.
The Thai name khomut is linked to Sanskrit gomūtra, “cow urine.” In manuscripts from Tai Lü, a regional Tai-speaking community, looped ornaments based on the mark frame story beginnings or endings.

Questions people ask
1Why does ๛ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
