khmer sign koomuut

Khmer sign Koomuut

91/114

៚ is a traditional Khmer mark for closing a text, especially poetry or religious writing. Its name, គោមូត្រ, is traditionally glossed as “cow urine,” referring to the sign’s winding shape.

Text symbol

What ៚ means

It marks the formal end of a Khmer text.

It traditionally ends Pali verses and Khmer poetry or religious writing. Pali is a language used in Buddhist scripture. The mark can also close a whole book or treatise.

A Khmer dictionary tentatively links this custom to Sri Lankan punctuation at Pali stanza endings. A study of Khmer manuscripts from 1843–1868 records eight punctuation marks but does not identify this one. A Khmer punctuation guide updated in June 2024 reports that some writers and newspapers retain it as heritage.

Formal, literary, or religious; in an ordinary message, it reads as a deliberate traditional flourish.

Why does ៚ show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
