What ឌ means
It has no standalone translation; it is a Khmer consonant. Say it as dɔɔ; the Khmer pronunciation of nearby vowels decides its exact sound.
It appears mostly in loanwords from Indic or Western sources, not as slang or chat shorthand. Khmer also writes related languages, and Thai and Lao belong to the same wider Brahmi-derived family.
Khmer writing grew from South Indian Brahmi-related forms; early inscriptions resemble Pallava. Its job was recording Khmer on stone, manuscripts, and official letters, with the earliest Cambodian-language inscription dated 611 at Angkor Borei. As of 2026, no separate first appearance or later meaning for ឌ alone is established. Stacked clusters use invisible coeng: wrong order or a font without Khmer shaping can leave a dotted circle.

Questions people ask
1Why does ឌ show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
