What គ means
It is the Khmer consonant named ko, from the second series.
Khmer writing developed from Early Pallava, a script used in southern India and Southeast Asia, itself descended from Brahmi, an ancient Indian writing system. Early inscriptions used Sanskrit for religious praise and Khmer for details such as dates, donors, and gifts. K.557/600 at Angkor Borei, the earliest dated Khmer inscription, dates to 611 CE and records a religious offering that included land, workers, animals, and rice fields. In Khmer spelling, the consonant series affects how vowel signs are read.
Why does គ change shape?
In a consonant cluster, a font draws it as a small subscript.
Khmer Unicode represents that form as ្គ: the coeng sign (្) followed by the letter គ. A Khmer font shapes the sequence as a subscript; Unicode does not encode a separate subscript-ko character. For a cluster, enter the main consonant, then coeng and the subscript consonant, following Khmer spelling order for vowel signs and other marks.

Questions people ask
1Why does គ show as a box on some devices?
Not every system ships a font for the Khmer block. Where none is installed, the character shows as an empty box; adding a font such as Noto fixes it. The character itself is still correct and copies correctly.
