khmer letter kho

Khmer Letter Kho

4/114

ឃ is kho in Khmer spelling, the o-series partner of ខ's aspirated k sound — not an emoji or picture. It is a spelling unit whose surrounding vowels and stacks control how the syllable is read. If someone sends only this glyph, ask for the surrounding Khmer text.

What ឃ means

It is a consonant letter, not a standalone message. Read it as kho, with an aspirated “kh” onset in the o-series class. By itself, it does not translate into a word or chat mood; the surrounding Khmer spelling supplies the meaning.

In a Khmer word, the class helps determine the sound of a dependent vowel. In a consonant stack, its subscript form represents a cluster without an intervening vowel; in final position, the written consonant can be realized as /k/ rather than the onset's /kh/. Read the whole syllable, not the isolated character.

When was Khmer script first written?

The earliest dated Old Khmer inscription known to us is from 611 CE. It was found at Angkor Borei as K.557/600 and engraved in Early Pallava, a Brahmi-derived script. As of 2026, no single inventor is established for the modern glyph; its form evolved with Khmer writing.

Early records had practical and institutional jobs: Old Khmer passages carried factual or administrative material, while Sanskrit passages praised deities and rulers and recorded temple foundations. Later Khmer forms kept the same phonographic job while the script's shapes and written languages changed. Thai and Lao scripts descend from an older Khmer form, a historical relationship — not a guess based on visual resemblance.

Neutral as Khmer spelling; alone, it signals no dependable friendliness, sarcasm, respect, or urgency.

Do not decode ឃ like a reaction; ask for the surrounding Khmer word.

Can the subscript form of ឃ be silent?

Yes. In ព្រះសង្ឃ, the subscript form is usually silent; a visible stack does not guarantee an extra pronounced consonant.
