What 𑆊 means
It is Sharada’s independent letter for Sanskrit’s long vocalic-r vowel.
A vocalic r is a syllable-forming sound: r itself carries the syllable instead of acting as a consonant followed by another vowel. Classical Sanskrit uses long ṝ rarely, chiefly in some plurals of nouns whose stems end in short vocalic r, conventionally transliterated ṛ.
As an independent vowel, 𑆊 begins a syllable. Its corresponding dependent sign attaches to a consonant, so the two forms are not interchangeable.
When did Sharada appear?
The script’s earliest record is debated. One proposal identifies an inscription at Hund dated 774–775, while other specialists date those forms to the 10th or 11th century. Utpala coins from the 9th–10th centuries are another candidate. The 12th-century Bakhshali mathematical manuscript is cited as the earliest Sharada manuscript.
Sharada was Kashmir’s principal inscriptional and literary script from the 8th century to the 20th century. Persian-script Kashmiri and Devanagari helped marginalize it in the 19th century. Sharada is closely related to Devanagari; in the 14th century, Devāśeṣa emerged as an intermediate form toward Takri. As of 2026, Unicode describes limited Kashmiri Pandit use for horoscopes and rituals.
Archival and technical: use it in Sharada writing or scholarly Sanskrit transcription, not as decoration.
